Jane Porter
Artist, Animal Researcher DISNEY'S TARZAN
|
Jane is a young woman living in Victoria-era Britain, alongside her father, the esteemed Professor Archimedes Q. Porter. What became of Jane's mother is unknown, though Archimedes briefly mentioned that their daughter takes after her, quite a bit. At adulthood, Jane became an animal researcher in a field that allows her to work closely with her father. Together, they use their combined resources to garner a better understanding of animal habitats and behavior. Their most ambitious expedition is one taking place in Africa, where a long-awaited journey to study gorillas was to occur.
Jane is a woman of high class and education who, despite the lifestyle lived by she and her father in their zoological explorations, still manages to maintain a certain level of standards. She has an idea of how people ought to behave, and does not see herself as ‘lesser’ simply for being a woman, quickly standing up to the likes of Tarzan when he oversteps, and the brutish Clayton when he doubts her ability. Her idea of what is ‘proper’ is a fairly lax one given the standards of the day, but she is quite firm about not stretching those boundaries too far, particularly with those she does not know very well.
She is a bright, adventurous young woman who will boldly set foot where no one has gone before with little fear for the consequences to herself. Her general fearlessness (to a point) can manifest as a kind of arrogance which feeds very much into her habit of getting herself into trouble, but her curiosity is genuine and she takes great care in respecting the new places in which she finds herself. After all, they don’t belong to her. Despite her upbringing, Jane is undeniably eccentric, though big-hearted and with an artistic soul that is implied to make her very similar to her mother. She has an ambitious, spontaneous streak which has taken her all over the world and driven her to become an accomplished zoologist as well as to develop impressive artistic skills which allow her to draw detailed sketches even from memory. Her intelligence is not only in what she knows and what skills she has developed, but also emotionally. Jane is an empathetic individual who cares deeply about others, be they human or animal, and she maintains a level of open-mindedness that lends itself well to being quick to adapt to new situations. Compassion is something which comes easily to Jane, and her openness to attempting to understand new things is something that ties into how well she expresses it. She would not be one to turn away from someone who was hurt or distressed, even if they had caused her harm before. Though she can be more wary of those she sees as not aligning with her own values, she will not preemptively turn away from them, but will let their actions speak for themselves. She does have a certain naivete, however. Her upbringing has not been sheltered by usual definition, but her absorption into the world she and her father create in their travels and studies together has closed her off slightly to always being able to ascertain the motivations of other people. Jane is a talkative individual who sometimes over-shares, with a sense of humour that is as eccentric as she is. Her various flaws make her far from perfect despite her talents, but her sunny disposition, will to soldier on even when everything seems stacked against her, and her ability to follow her heart to the things she truly desires (despite what she knows is expected of her) make her a delightful young woman to be around.
Jane is a talented artist and zoologist, but has no superhuman ability.
